Thanks for the read and for the comment, Michael.

You've described the negative spiral I imagined when I wrote this last year and rightly characterized much of it as unintended consequences.

Agreed - we also stick to over-the-air broadcasts, and have watched significantly less football (NFL and college) the past few years, and almost no bowl games. In turn, we've become less interested in football, have attended fewer local games, and bought less merchandise. This has reduced connectivity to our alma maters, and in turn motivated the diversion of charitable donations from universities to other local organizations. Colleges may make short-term money with their ESPN contracts, but they're diminishing long-term relationships with alumni and fans.

Thanks so much for giving this a read, Sean, and for the comment.

Nice observation about control. I've not followed it as you have, but I expect from your comment and their fan/follower counts that the MLB did not understand the distributive power of the social networks (favoring the walled garden of MLB.com).

Loved the video - great sound mix, well produced, tons of interesting info. Especially liked the Shaq vs the 6 teams for which he's played in Twitter followers.

Thanks again.

Nice post interesting to note how the different leagues embraced social media NBA definitely took it on quicker whereas MLB wanted to control it more & keep fans on MLB.com.

You might be interested in our sports digital revolution video that backs up some of your stats. http://sportsgeek.com.au/sports-marketing/sports-digital-revolution/

Good comments, all. Thanks for that.

@Stacy - as a consequence of trying to serve all with one video, there's no call to action and no clear impression left

@Tucker - thanks for the post - nice work popping up the page and getting traction so quickly

@Rick - I think they thought Up might be a strong enough reference to the Peak, but I agree with you

@Bob - yes, locally-based branding company, but I've heard the video was produced from Castle Rock

Again, thanks for reading and commenting!

It looks like a local firm was employed to do the logo design... Stone Mantel is their name ( gostonemantel.com/ ). They also rebranded Anchorage Alaska (years ago) and it met with similar ire from the locals.

I think one of them main assets / strengths of Colorado Springs is its natural beauty. Any tagline that leaves it out comes up short. A couple examples of how it could be brought in:
Colorado Springs - Where Life is Beautiful
Experience The Beautiful Life - Colorado Springs
Americas Beautiful City or The Beautiful America
etc

Good comments, gentlemen, and thanks for reading.

Yes, Mack, there's great potential in social engagement. The primary gap that exists right now, though, is that 95% of monetization of effort is in the linear broadcast. I'm not sure that the social efforts will bring people to the linear broadcast, rather than train them that they no longer need it to get the content they seek. Qualifier: there are definitely examples of live, entertainment programs benefiting from social engagement.

Other related thoughts:

KOMU is definitely a darling right now.

Really bad weather and crazy breaking news will continue to bring people to live television for years to come.

The default mindset seems to treat fans and followers as a monetizable mass, rather than as individuals with whom you should connect and engage.
